2021 Queen, Chandler Hayes, bids farewell

October 20th, 2021 had finally arrived, the day I will never forget. Believe or not, we still had not decided which jacket I was going to wear. My Mother bought a few options to choose from, but she kept going back to the blue jacket. Blue has always been "my color" but it's not the conventional fall color you would expect to see on a Miss Pumpkin Show candidate. Blue was also my Grandmother Mary's favorite but sadly, she passed away the year before on my 16th birthday. I put on the blue jacket one last time and we knew it was the one. To complete the look, we added the corsage, and my grandmother's bracelet. I was ready.

My road to becoming Miss Pumpkin Show was unexpected. I remember coming home from school and telling my parents "Tomorrow is the deadline to put your name in for Miss Pumpkin Show Candidate". My Dad said, "Why don't you try out?" I was shocked! I never really considered it. I had envisioned myself on that stage, many Pickaway County girls do, but that was just a dream. Could I actually win? Dad said "What do you have to lose? If you run Kid, you will win!" If you know my dad, this statement wouldn't surprise you at all. I'm Daddy's girl and he's always believed I can do anything. So, with that incredible endorsement, I decided to go for it!

The next day I entered my name along with many others at Circleville High School. The votes were tallied, and I learned Brooklyn List and myself were voted as Circleville High Schools representatives for the 114th Circleville Pumpkin Show!

The weeks leading up to the Pumpkin Show were so much fun. We ordered T-shirts promoting "The Tiger Queen". My mom made hilarious signs and ordered fatheads. I was introduced to local Jeannie Radcliff, who volunteers her time to help girls prepare for the competition. I quickly signed up and I'm so glad I did. Jeannie was incredible! She helped this Tomboy learn how to talk, walk, and stand properly. We were asked random questions and taught dining etiquette. Seeing Jeannie gave me the boost of confidence I needed.

I realized going through the training just how much I wanted to win. Not only for myself, but for my school, family, and the countless people who have poured their love and support into my life.

After all the preparation, I was ready, and the night of the crowning was unprecedented. There was a tie and all remaining contestants had to answer one last question. "Using the first letter of your name, what word would you use to describe yourself?". While the girls before me were giving their answers, I was praying and thinking of a word for the letter "C". All of a sudden, the word "Courageous" came to mind and I knew that was me, I am Courageous! After giving our answers, the finalists sat nervously holding hands waiting for the results. Those moments felt like a lifetime. Drexel Poling named the 2nd Attendant and 1st Attendant. After a short pause I heard "Your 114th Pumpkin Show Queen is Miss Chandler Hayes!" My face fell to my hands and down to my lap. I did it! Tears of joy and the cheering of my classmates, friends, and family filled Pumpkin Show Park. The only thing missing was my precious Grandmother. But I know she was there in spirit.

After crowning, the fun began! The next day the court and I were presented gifts in a large basket by local businesses. Thank you again to all the donors! One of my favorites, my first Jack Pine Pumpkin! Throughout the week, the court and I did multiple interviews, photo shoots, and appeared on "Good Day Columbus", but the best part was riding our beautiful float night after night. The week went by so fast, I tried to take it all in and enjoy every moment. Seeing all the smiling faces, waves and cheers from friends and family, is something I will cherish forever.

As I look back at my year as Miss Pumpkin Show, I'm filled with love and gratitude. Our beautiful state boasts many fun filled festivals and I encourage everyone to experience them for yourselves! I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our chaperone's Linda, Rob, Calee, Dianna, and Dawn. We've created memories to last a lifetime. One of my favorite's was playing the "Coin Game" and spending all of the quarters we could find. The Circleville Pumpkin Show is "The Greatest Free Show On Earth" because of people like you.

To my Amazing Court:

I love you both very much. I'm glad we experienced this adventure together.

Brooklyn, you're a kind, beautiful friend with a smile that lights up a room. You put your heart in everything that you do. An excellent cheerleader, student, and a brave role model for all young girls who struggle with diabetes.

Ava, we've known each other for as long as I can remember. Starting as preschool friends and as competitors in school sports. I am amazed by all of your talents and abilities. I'm so impressed by your work ethic and jealous of your beautiful hair and freckles! There is nothing you cannot do. You are awesome!

Mom and Dad: Thank you for instilling me with great values and faith in Jesus Christ. Mom, you were my stylist and makeup artist. You made sure I always looked my best! I love you both.

Lastly, I would like to send my love and thanks to this wonderful community! I have great pride in my hometown and pray I've represented our great Circleville Pumpkin Show with the honor it deserves. Please remember, Jesus Loves you and so do I. See you at the show!

With Love, Your 2021 Miss Circleville Pumpkin Show Queen Chandler Hayes.
